In from 2001 to 2003 I recorded an album entirely about my mother. I made exactly one copy and gave it to her. She didn't really get it, but also, she probably did.

Musically, this was based on a weird idea. I recorded 45 minutes of improvised drum beats in one take and then wrote songs over those drum beats over years. The whole thing was recorded on a TASCAM 4-Track recorder and is made entirely without computers. I recorded it in an infamous LA practice space, in the house I rented with my friends on Franklin Ave in LA and then in the closet of my apartment in Oakland.

I don't really know if it is any good, though I'm pretty sure that the general conceit is interesting. I abandoned my childish dreams to become a professional musician soon after this was made. I went to grad school, had kids, became a French professor etc.

Now that I'm an amateur music critic on YouTube I thought it only fair to expose my own music. Of course, I barely recognize the crazy kid who made this music, so I listen to it almost as a stranger.

I'm partially releasing it because Kanye is releasing his album about his mother next week. I'm also partially releasing it because it will soon be the 5th anniversary of my mother's death and I miss her.
